The first iteration of Turn is modeled on a classic mixing protocol. Without using complex smart contracts or zero knowledge proofs the first iteration, which we're calling Turn Classic, enhances user privacy without requiring users give up control of their coins even for a moment.
Below is a diagram of our V1 protocol.
Later versions of Turn will build upon multichain interactions with the Midnight partnerchain. By sending tokens to Midnight and back users will be able to mint shielded token bundles and bring them back to Cardano or any other network with a bridge to Midnight.
Key technical components include:
Zero-Knowledge Proofs: Used to verify transactions without revealing sensitive data.
Multi-Token Support: Turn Network supports ADA and Cardano native tokens, allowing privacy across a wide range of assets.
Decentralized Architecture: Turn never requires a user give up control of their assets. Not for a second. Turn classic moves assets from your wallet directly into a new address specified by you in a single transaction and provides users an opportunity to verify this before signing.
This robust technical foundation positions Turn Network as a leading privacy solution on Cardano, offering secure and private transactions within its growing DeFi ecosystem.
Product Overview and Technical Details
Turn Network’s core product is a decentralized mixer for ADA and Cardano native tokens. The classic mixer operates by crafting a transaction with many inputs from various users and a uniform set of outputs each on a fresh address specified by each of the users. This same architecture will work for ada as well as other native assets.
How the Mixing Works:
Users sign up to participate in a mixing ceremony, specifying a wallet and a receiving address
The turn mixer operator constructs a transaction with inputs from all wallets and uniform outputs to each receiving address. This transaction also includes a small operator fee.
The operator gathers signatures on the transaction from all users
Any users who fail to provide a signature, or who spend one of the transactions inputs elsewhere, are blacklisted. A new transaction is created and the operator requests new signatures from the remaining participants.
Once all signatures have been gathered the operator submits the transaction on-chain and the ceremony concludes.
Turn Network’s product ensures that all token mixes are secure, anonymous, and compatible with Cardano’s native assets, providing users with a seamless privacy experience.
The second iteration of Turn will take advantage of Midnight which is a privacy preserving ZK smart contract platform. Users will be able to bridge multiple assets from multiple networks to create "shielded token bundles". These STBs are NFTs which represent a collection of tokens, potentially originating from separate networks. These STBs can then be taken to Cardano or any other network with a bridge to Midnight. Users can always interact with Midnight to redeem the underlying tokens locked in an STB.
